Our introduction to Armour Lake was through Ed Ehrich when Don came to Madison to consider joining the endocrine section at the University Hospital. That was in 1982 and we were living in Denver. Our grown daughters elected mother Joanne to come investigate. When she returned with a camera full of photos and contagious enthusiasm caught from Dean Svitavski, we bought the cottage erected by Matt Yench in 1969 on East Armour Lake Road.
While each of our four daughters is a co-owner, most living in other parts of the country, their families treasure normally annual visits to Armour Lake. Each of our 10 grandchildren have memories of frogs, crayfish, loons, osprey, herons, canoe trips up to Crab Lake and down to Presque Isle, and the entirety of Bill’s Island. There was even a time about 15 years ago when a tricky wind upset our sailboat out by Bloodgood’s Island. The Farley’s went to the rescue in their pontoon boat bringing Don, daughter Kathy, and 2 standard poodles home safely. The center board remains at the bottom despite efforts to find it.
About 6 or 7 years ago it was apparent that the growing size and number of our family could no longer fit into the original cabin space. Our son-in-law Scott designed and Don, with the help of an old college friend, built an addition to accommodate extra family and friends.
We look forward to our 25th year in the peace and quiet of Armour Lake in Wisconsin’s northwoods.
